A screen pops up on my desktop saying its an emergency and my computer is going to crash unless I call a phone number for help. There is also with the screen appearing, a beeping sound from the computer itself that further enhances the panic. My wife is not computer savy so she called the number and gave them access to the computer before I came home and shut it down. Staqrted up ok the next day and no sign of the screen or the beep, but I am wondering if they put something there that gives them info going forward. What should I do? Do I need to totally wipe and re-install? How did this get by Webroot's screening? No detection by Webroot at all.

Hi evanmaust

Please IGNORE this message/popup....it is most definitively a scam trying to offer you services you do not need and trying to get you to part with you cash. Most sensible question to ask yourself here is 'How the hell would anyone but Microsoft know about this'...and if purporting to come from Microsoft, as some do, have you ever heard of Microsoft contact you in this way? In short...NO.

This is adware or scamware and if it appears when you are browsing the Internet then most likely you need to either enable the browser's inbuilt popup blocker (IE/Edge/Chrome/Firefox/etc.) or add a suitable adware/popup blocker extenstion (IE/Chrome/Firefox/Opera). Here are some suggestions of such blockers that we have found to be useful:

For Internet Explorer Ad Block Plus: https://adblockplus.org/

For Firefox uBlock Origin: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/ublock-origin/?src=ss or Privacy Badger: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-us/firefox/addon/privacy-badger-firefox/

Google Chrome uBlock: https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/ublock-origin/cjpalhdlnbpafiamejdnhcphjbkeiagm?hl=en or Privacy Badger: https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/privacy-badger/pkehgijcmpdhfbdbbnkijodmdjhbjlgp

Hope this helps and if not then please get back to us as we may need to provide information on PUAs and how to deal with them (but do not want to do that until we are certain as to the source of the popups).

Regards, Baldrick
