I cannot press alt keys in chrome.  

I’d rather not add as a trusted application since won’t that pretty much disable protection for it?

When in chrome I try to press alt-d to get to url box, focus does not switch to url box and highlight the full url.

Can you be more specific when you say you can’t use Alt Keys? I’m not quite sure what you mean. But to answer your 2nd question - no, adding chrome as a trusted application will not disable protection for it.
