The latest Webroot BrightCloud Threat Report is here, and our findings show that cybercriminals are as creative and hardworking as ever. Although 2020 brought countless challenges for businesses and individuals all over the world, it seems to have offered cybercriminals new avenues to scam internet users, steal data, and cause disruption. But the criminals weren’t the only ones hard at work. Cybersecurity analysts have been clocking overtime to identify and neutralize new threat tactics as quickly as they appear. Operating systems and web browsers are making effective improvements to their built-in security. Security awareness training for employees continues to improve security postures. Nations and companies are working together to break down cybercriminal infrastructure. Here are some of the highlights from the reportCriminals targeted COVID-19 topics like it was their job (because it kind of is…) Most of the malicious spam (malspam) emails we’ve seen have used COVID-related phishin
The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) recently updated Special Publication 800-53, Security and Privacy Controls for Information Systems and Organizations, with an important update regarding recommended security awareness training. In summary, control enhancements were added recommending the use of phishing simulations as part of a comprehensive security program. The specific language in NIST SP 800-53, Rev. 5, Section 5.3 (pg. 60) reads:“Practical exercises include no-notice social engineering attempts to collect information, gain unauthorized access, or simulate the adverse impact of opening malicious email attachments or invoking, via spear-phishing attacks, malicious web links.”The mention of “no-notice” is important. NIST is essentially noting that asking employees to spot the phishing attempt from a group of emails is very different than being able to refrain from taking the bait in real-world situations. Realistic phishing simulations are the only way to truly

It’s no coincidence that World Backup Day – March 31 – falls right before April Fool’s Day. Losing data is no joke. And it can really make you feel foolish. So, before you lose data, back it up. You’ll be glad you did.World Backup Day was organized by a concerned group of internet users who dared to ask the question, “What would happen if you lost everything?” If you think it could never happen, then you’re exactly the type of person World Backup Day was created for. We’re here to tell you: it can, it does, and it will.At Carbonite HQ, we keep track of the number of customers we’ve saved from ransomware. The count is over 13,000 as of this writing. And that’s just from one form of data loss. There are many more. The most common is human error. There’s one thing everyone who has experienced ransomware and other forms of data loss have in common. And that’s the relief they feel when they get their data back. There’s nothing like it. And that’s what we acknowledge on World Backup Day.Every

In our discussion of last year’s SolarWinds attack and related collateral damage, we’ve been providing Community members with tips for reducing their exposure to the next major IT supply chain attack. Addressing network-level security is another key step in doing so. While not a part of the initial compromise, data from breached companies was exfiltrated following the attack using a method known as DNS tunneling. The internet’s domain name system (DNS), often referred to as the phonebook of the internet, is a piece of technology with rare staying power. It’s the system that translates the sting of numbers making up an IP address a computer can recognize into a URL that humans can easily memorize.DNS is attractive to hackers because the protocol is trusting, making it easy to exploit. After all, the original DNS has been around since the 1980s and was never designed with privacy or security in mind. As the communication cornerstone of the internet, DNS is an ideal target for cybercr
The SolarWinds attack discovered near the end of last year shook the cybersecurity community. The tactics that enabled its success will undoubtedly be copied, but there are things businesses can do to protect themselves and their users from the most severe consequences of a breach like this. That's why, in this series, we're offering some tips for defending against the next attack targeting IT supply chains.Even the best threat intelligence feeds can be easily undermined by unwise policy configurations. When threat warnings are ignored for whatever reason – convenience, overconfidence, insufficient attention – administrators essentially help attackers overcome an initial layer of defense. That's why our second piece of advice for limiting the damage caused by supply chain attacks deals with policy configurations. Ensure policy settings are up to dateOnce the fundamentals are in place, it’s also critical that policies are enabled and configured properly to best take advantage of the thr

As mentioned in a previous post, cybersecurity experts widely believe the SolarWinds attack will inspire other supply chain attacks with similarly devastating consequences for all types of businesses. In that initial statement on our Community page, we promised to expand on our tips for protecting your business or clients from the inevitable fallout of future attacks. That protection starts with contextual, actionable threat intelligence. Maybe it’s not the flashiest of defense tactics, but the basics still matter. While other security vendors may have marked SolarWind's Orion updates as coming from a trusted partner, the right threat intelligence feeds could have prevented further communication with the C2 server used in the attack. In the case of the Webroot BrightCloud Threat Intelligence platform, an IP address involved in the attack had been associated with a botnet and categorized as high-risk in the summer of last year Properly configured, our security tools would have blocked com

By now visitors to the Webroot Community will certainly have heard about the SolarWinds attack at the end of last year. From the earliest news, it was clear that this was no ordinary cyberattack, both because of who was targeted and how the attack was carried out. While many details remain unknown, we know that the IT management platform SolarWinds was the subject of a cyberattack that spread to its clients and went undetected for months. The attackers were essentially able to Trojanize a SolarWinds update, known as Orion, allowing them to collect data on machines that had the update installed. The Cybersecurity Infrastructure & Security Agency (CISA) first disclosed the attack on December 13, 2020. While many believe the attack was state sponsored, many of the specifics have yet to be confirmed. We post this not to sling mud at anyone in our industry, but because supply chain attacks like this one will certainly be replicated and we owe it to our customers and partners to advise on t
Cloud service and cloud application usage are both steadily rising throughout both enterprise and small-to-medium sized businesses. Organizations are increasingly turning to Cloud Access Security Brokers (CASB) and other technology and security vendors to address cloud service risks, enforce security policies, and comply with regulations, even when cloud services are beyond their perimeter and out of their direct control. Webroot® BrightCloud Cloud Service Intelligence enables our partners to enforce data-centric security policies to prevent unwanted interactions with cloud services and associated applications by providing cloud application-specific threat intelligence. Through a suite of three components – Cloud Application Classification, Cloud Application Function, and Cloud Application Reputation – partners are able identify, classify, and control access based on the application’s classification, function, and reputation score. DetailsOpenText™ has been following the SolarWinds Sunburst attack campaign closely since it was disclosed on December 13, 2020.To help reduce the risk to our customers, we continue to proactively review our systems to assess any potential impact of the issues described in the SolarWinds Security Advisory. As part of Webroot® BrightCloud® Threat Intelligence, we were able to ensure the reported indicators of compromise (IOCs) including URLs, IP addresses, and file hashes were marked as threats in our databases within 24 hours of being shared with the broader security community. This means our network of BrightCloud Threat Intelligence partners, our Webroot MSP partners and our Webroot end users are protected against these known malicious IOCs. Webroot Secure Anywhere is positioned to quarantine known malicious file hashes for removal. On December 14, Microsoft sinkholed the main C2 server used for communications for the threat campaign, "avsvmcloud[.]com". Following our sinkhole policy,
Webroot recently surveyed more than 200 MSPs around the world to gauge their phishing awareness and learn about their clicking habits. We thought this was important to do because of the pervasive misconception that endpoint security and a firewall are sufficient protection from online threats. But cyberattacks are increasingly interpersonal affairs, and hacking the human is often a more surefire path to success for cybercriminals. The results of our study show that, while there's still a need for awareness of that fact, many organizations are catching on. Here's what the data tell us about the problem and how it could be solved.Click on the attachment below to view the full infographic! Did anything surprise you? Let us know in the comments below.
