Just published is the most recent Cyberthreat Defense Report, commissioned by Webroot and 12 other security vendors. It is conducted across 15 countries and is notable as it follows a consistent approach, which is very useful for seeing any trends that are emerging.

The 2017 Report is based upon data collected at the end of November 2016 from over 1,100 respondents.  A few key highlights:

  • There has been a steady increase in successful cyberattacks, up from 62% in 2014 to 79% in 2017.
  • The nations most susceptible to successful attacks were China 96%; Mexico 94%; Colombia 87%; South Africa 83%; UK 82% (USA was 81%).
  • The weakest links were identified as mobile devices and social media applications.
  • Malware, phishing and insider data exfiltration were seen as the biggest cyberthreat headaches.
  • Ransomware statistics showed 3 in 5 organizations victimized in 2016 but only 1 in 3 of the victims paying out the ransom.  That’s still appallingly high as it means 20% of all organizations coughed-up a ransom in 2016!
Much more useful security trend and information data is available in the report, which you can download here: http://wbrt.io/x26r
