Don't be phooled: 10 phishing techniques to look out for

In 2016, American businesses suffered half a billion dollars a year in losses from phishing attacks with the average cost at $1.6 million each. These numbers are alarming evidence that just one click can cause significant financial and reputational damage to your brand. And since studies show that a staggering 30 percent of phishing emails get opened, it’s no wonder that they consistently rank as the top cyberattack vector.

Despite being one of the oldest cyberattacks in the book, phishing remains so popular because it’s a highly effective means of exploiting the weakest link in the cybersecurity chain: humans. To make matters worse, hackers have become much more sophisticated in their techniques: no more poorly written, typo-ridden Viagra spam emails and unclaimed heritage scams. Phishing attacks are now highly targeted, dynamic and "hypermorphic," making them increasingly difficult for both humans and machines to detect.

The Webroot 2018 Threat Report

If there’s one thing that came through loud and clear in our analysis of malware and other threats in 2017, it’s that, when it comes to cybersecurity, change is the only constant. While analysts, researchers, and security companies worked quickly to identify and block emerging threats, attackers were just as quick in finding new ways to evade defenses. Phishing attacks became more targeted and successful, and most phishing sites were only online for 4-8 hours. Cryptojacking gained traction as an anonymous and relatively easy path to profit, as did ransomware attacks, which made headlines numerous times throughout the year. High-risk IP addresses continue to cycle between benign and malicious to avoid detection, and the top 10,000 IPs most often associated with malicious activity changed status an average of 18 times throughout the year.

The 2018 edition of our annual Threat Report shares a glimpse into our discoveries and analysis of threat activity throughout 2017, to equip you with the knowledge you need to overcome modern cybercrime.

Channel Partners names Webroot as a top antivirus software provider

Antivirus (AV) software is designed to detect, prevent and remove malware. That includes viruses, worms, trojans and scareware, as well as some forms of unwanted programs, such as adware and spyware. Analysts, a member of the Channel Partners Editorial Advisory Board and other industry experts shared their views on what it now takes to succeed in antivirus software.

From ChannelPartnersOnline:

Gartner calls the former (Webroot) a niche player, saying its "detection technology is well-regarded and performs well in third-party tests. The vendor has a long list of technology and service providers that use its detection capabilities as OEMs."

In March, Webroot announced double-digit, year-over-year annual recurring revenue growth for the second quarter of its 2018 fiscal year, marking its 16th consecutive quarter of double-digit, year-over-year revenue growth.

See what people have been saying about us

  • "I have used this on all my computers and have complete confidence in this protection - not a single problem and scanning and utilities are very fast."
  • "I just love webroot I've had it for several years now. I just need to put it on my grandson's laptop it'll be my 3rd device. Thank you."
  • "I've used many different antivirus programs over the years and this is the first time I've been impressed enough to go out of my way to write a review. Webroot is low profile, light on resources but heavy on features and has consistently been catching many suspicious files that previous programs I've used have been missing. The interface is straightforward and makes it a simple process to manage false positives, something a lot of the other programs turn into a convoluted and frustrating process. I suspect I will be using Webroot for a long time to come. Thanks for a truly great product!"
