33 Percent of Consumers Would Change Retailers After a Data Breach

A Javelin survey also found that 30 percent of patients would change healthcare providers following a breach.A recent survey of 5,634 U.S. adults has found that 33 percent of consumers will shop elsewhere if their retailer of choice is breached (h/t SC Magazine). The survey also found that 30 percent of patients will find a new healthcare provider if their hospital or doctor's office is breached, and 24 percent of consumers will change banks or credit card providers if their financial institution is breached.
The study, entitled "Avoidable Collateral Damage from Corporate Data Breaches", was sponsored by Identity Finder and conducted by Javelin Strategy & Research.
"A significant proportion of affected consumers discontinue or reduce their patronage post-breach," Javelin senior analyst Al Pascual said in a statement. "That's real money lost in customer churn and reduced sales, and certainly demonstrates how the reputation of the organization hits the bottom line".
"It's noteworthy that about a third of people will go as far as to find a new doctor if their provider is breached, as we all know healthcare services can be a big hassle to change", Pascual added.
