‘Lizard Squad,’ The Hacker Gang That Shut Down PlayStation Network And Xbox Live For 2 Straight Days, Is Now Reportedly Attacking Tor

December 26th. Dave Smith
EXCERPT. The Tor Project is one of the most popular and effective sites for encrypted communication: Whistleblowers like Edward Snowden have used the service, and it's proven pivotal in "dissident movements" in Iran and Egypt.
To clarify, we are no longer attacking PSN or Xbox. We are testing our new Tor 0day.

Tor's service keeps users anonymous by bouncing communications around a large network of computers known as "volunteer nodes." But as Gizmodo points out, if one group can control most of the nodes — which is exactly what Lizard Squad is attempting to do here — it may “be able to eavesdrop on a substantial number of vulnerable users.”
Computer programmer Nadim Kobeissi says Lizard Squad has claimed nearly half of Tor’s ~8,000 relays.
There's a total of ~8,000 Tor relays - @LizardMafia now owns almost half of them. Big implications on Tor anonymity. https://t.co/6RhTLqDS2p

Lizard Squad attacks Tor network, ignoring warning from Anonymous

Lizard Squad, the group believed to be behind the Christmas DDoS attacks on Xbox Live and PlayStation Network now has a new target -- Tor. Just a week ago, the leader of the Tor Project, Roger Dingledine, warned that the anonymizing network could come under attack, and now it seems as though his prediction was correct.
War has already been declared on Lizard Squad by Anonymous, but this does not seem to have been enough to deter the group from its attacks. Reports suggest that more than 3,000 Tor relays have been compromised, and there are fears that this could impact on the anonymity Tor was designed to offer.
Yesterday, Lizard Squad announced that it was no longer targeting Xbox Live and the PlayStation Network. It's not clear whether this decision came as a result of Kim Dotcom's intervention but by switching its attention to Tor, the group is certainly trying to draw attention to itself:

Tor, the anonymity network, is recovering this weekend after it was targeted by hackers.
The peer-to-peer network designed to keep users' and their activities anonymous from state surveillance was the subject of an attack, said to be launched by the same hackers who brought down Sony's PlayStation Network and Microsoft's Xbox Live services over the Christmas holiday.
In a statement on Friday, the Tor Project said the attack attempted to undermine the service by flooding it with fake servers.
