Okay, here I go being very remedial, but...  With this new hack dealio, I checked my Windows updates to run a manual check despite the fact that I have it set up to scan automatically.  Thus far I have not seen anything come up as an important update.

Am I missing something or has this hack thing done something to affect how Windows checks for patches and updates to protect against the intrusion?

Or, better yet, is my WSA protecting my system while the Windows thing is getting sorted out?

I'm really hoping that the latter is the case as I always feel really safe thanks to my full protection with Webroot...:D

Hello gr8auntteffie,

I believe that most of the updates apply to those running Windows 10 operating system. If you are not, then those do not affect you. If you are running  automatic updates, I would imagine that they are working properly. Some of those updates have already been released. I would not be too concerned when posts indicate new updates. Some just like to get the updates very early. They like to test them on their devices. If you still need help or if this solves your issue, please write back.:D

Thanks, Theresa

Hi gr8auntteffie

Hope that you are well?

I think that that much in the same way as when Webroot annouce a WRSA update we don't all see it automatically or even we we run a manaul update check, the same is true of Windows Updates.

As far as I am aware, given the numers of users worldwide, the avaialbility is staged and therefore receipt will depend on where you are/where you connect to as to how quickly the updates arrive. Either way I would be very surprised if the delay is more than a few hours most of the time.

So, if you see nothing after a couple of days then I would start to be concerned and post back here as it may be that you do indeed have a local system issue.

Regards, Baldrick

Point well taken. Thanks Baldrick.

@Hi, Theresa!  I am running Windows 8.1 on my system, so I hope that means i'm good!

@Whenever important updates come thru they get immediatey installed by me, and I also run an additional check after I do that to see if there might be something new just to be on the safe side.  Thus far, over the past few days there have been no important updates provided by Windows...  so, I will wait a few days and then check back in.

Thank you both!

ETA:  I did a manual WSA scan on my system and then ran the System Optimizer and System Analyzer figuring that the product would know what to look for and what might be missing ( am I wrong to think that my WSA can do ANYTHING? 😃 ) and everything seems to be good on my system...

I feel reassured by this and that my WSA is my personal bodyguard against any nasty worms or other critters that are designed to make my computer sick and my life miserable!

( I know, I'm a dork! ):S:$:p

Thank you to everyone for putting up with me!

Hi gr8auntteffie,

Please do not apologize for being human. You should have seen some of my earliest posts!! I think that the community thought that I was totally bonkers. So you are in the right place.;)

I am running Windows 8.1 also. If you swipe the left side of your device and select settings, then at the bottom select change PC settings, then select Update and Recovery, then select Update and History, then select view your update history, you will see all of your installed updates. The most recent one that I have is called optional and the code is KB4022720. Optional indicates that it will not be installed automatically but it is available and you have to download and update manually. If it was an important update, it would update in the background. I hope that I am not being redundant with all of the instructions!

Webroot will not check for any updates other than its own and I think it updates automatically. Webroot will not check your device for any other updates; i.e. Windows, peripherals, drivers, etc.

Hope that explains it. Please let me know if you need any additional information or if your system is up to date, we would love to hear that also. It's helpful for the community as a whole to ensure that we are providing helpful info.

Best,
Theresa

@   I don't have the sweep thing to the left, but the one on the right doesn't give me the options you noted.  I keep running the Windows update deal and it doesn't come up with any new updates either important or optional.  I don't know if I should be reassured or not...

My oops. Should have typed swipe from the right side of the screen with your mouse and the options should appear. What options are listed? How do you access Windows Update?

@  After poking around a bit ( which always rattles my nerves ) I found what you were talking about, but as I was on line and typing my response to you, I noticed that there was a decided delay between what I was typing and what was making it to the screen, and when it showed up, it was in a big run-on sentence.  So, after running a WSA manual scan, I then did a restart of my computer, at which time my toolbar icon on the lower right went through a transformation where several icons disappeared, even though they are supposed to load on the toolbar, including my WSA little green icon which carries the yellow lock on it when I am on line showing that I am protected on that page.

So, I don't know what's going on.  Either the optional updates I added yesterday to make sure that I didn't miss something truly important did something to the way things are loading, or something else is going on.  I didn't click on anything to make any changes at any point because I am so paranoid about doing something wrong and killing my laptop.

So, again, I have no clue what's up or why my icons are disappearing from the toolbar, but I sure don't like it!  I find the same visuals to be very reassuring every time I turn on my computer, and when that changes for an unknown reason, I start to panic.

Yikes!

ETA:  I gave up worrying about it and just turned off my computer after running Windows maintenance and another full system scan.  After letting it sit for a bit and turning it back on, all of the little icons that had been summarily removed from the right side of the taskbar were back where they belonged.

At this point, I am going to take that as a good omen and just see what happens over the next few days.  I figure over the holiday weekend not a whole lot new will get done at the Windows head office!

Thanks again everyone and have a wonderful weekend!

Hi gr8auntteffie

That sounds like a plan...if not for your system but also for you in terms of clearing your thinking on the subject and then coming back to the 'issue' with bases reset.

Do bear in mind that if necessary you can also try a further uninstall/clean reinstall to see if that eleviates the issue from the WRSA perspective (and if yo uwould like to try that then we can guide you through the steps...just let us know).

Regards, Baldrick

Hi grauntteffie,

Please do not worry. between Baldrick and myself we will find out what is going on. Can you shut down the computer and all peripherals (printers, modems, etc.), wait ten minutes then turn them all back on. Give everything a few minutes to settle. Wait until the drive icon on your PC (if u r using a PC) has stopped flashing (and it could be a continuous light for a bit). After the device has stopped loading all of the startups, etc. then log in. Wait again for the light to go out. Run another full scan. Also, can you send along your Webroot settings. If you can snip and paste that's great, if not we can show you how. This will be over before you know it!! Don't worry.

@   Thus far I still haven't seen any new updates come in over the past several days, important or otherwise, and I do run a check, so I don't know what's up but hope that I'm still in good shape...

I have noticed that the clock on my WSA product is still out of whack in terms of keeping accurate time between scans.  I ran a scan at around 11AM and then at 9PM it showed that it had been 1 day, 3 hours and some minutes since the last scan, which was very wrong, so I think that something isn't meshing properly somewhere.

I am assuming that my product is still working well even if the clock is off so I'm not panicking at this point, but this is not the first time that the clock has gone out of whack with my product and I have a feeling it has something to do with the updates some way or other.

Sometimes you already have these updates installed and Microsoft has just added more info and in this case it's Version 4 see below:

Hi again gr8auntteffie,

Please do not throw yourself into a panic. Near as I can tell from your posts, your laptop is working and you don't need to worry yourself that you are missing something. Some of the volunteers here are seasoned professionals and are engaged in other forums (at elevated status also:D) and like updates when they are released. A lot of them are using Windows 10 (which you are not).

Your system is set to get Windows and other updates automatically. I beleive that you can find your way around the update process to determine which ones are optional and should be downloaded.

Don't worry about the Webroot clock either. Mine does that sometimes too. It is nothing to panic about.  I think that you are doing just fine and appreciate your joining our community. It is a very informational place to come and sometimes we get silly but that is ok too. It's just life.:D

If you need me and I am off line, please send me a message and I will jump in. I am super busy with the pets at this time of year but I will always log in to reply to a message.

Happy Fourth! :D

Hi Daniel,

Thanks for the updates. I sent gr8auntteffie a PM as she reminded me of me! It's frustrating to get overwhelmed and I thought a girlie chat was needed.:D

All is well and she is on her way in the Webroot Community.  I appreicate your help always.

Hello, everybody!  I am feeling quite zen at this point and am not sweating the update issue as I keep doing my manual check after the automatic checks and nothing important is coming in nor any optionals, so I figure the system is doing what it is supposed to, in spite of the user's anxiety!

As for my clock issue with my WSA product, as long as it isn't an indication of some misalignment of things in my system, I'm fine with it being off kilter.  After all, aren't we all a little off kilter?

I hope everyone is having a wonderful day and thank you all for being so patient and kind.  I cannot tell you how much I appreciate it.

Thanks gr8auntteffie,

Glad to hear that you are settled and are comfortable with your laptop. Feel free to always post here as there are many who can help you.
Best,
