By Stephen McBride Published September 15, 2015 Russian president Vladimir Putin became the target of a cyber-attack amid a regional election campaign, as his official website was hit by an unknown actor, Reuters reported.
According to a government statement, the attack, which happened on Sunday, targeted websites of the Kremlin, the nation's election commission and the president.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said officials had linked the onslaught, which he described as "very powerful", to regional elections where the opposition sought to unseat government-backed candidates.
