Privacy comms firm says money will meet Blackphone demand and fund growth

By Brid-Aine Parnell, 22 May 2014  Silent Circle, the privacy mobile firm that touts anti-snooping hardware and software, has raised $30m in new capital and added a few new faces to its board.

The firm claimed it needs the cash pile to meet “overwhelming demand” for its Blackphone, the smartphone that’s marketed as an anti-eavesdropping device.
 The mobile was released earlier this year into a market primed to be interested in a privacy-focused machine after the NSA snooping revelations, even if its developers admit it’s not “NSA-proof”. The handset comes loaded with a hardened version of Android called PrivatOS and a suite of Silent Circle apps and other privacy tools.

Silent Circle apps are also available separately for both iOS and Android phones to encrypt calls and texts, although security experts have questioned just how private they can make communications if the person on the other end doesn’t have the same sort of precautions in place.

However, that doesn’t seem to be affecting the firm’s growth, which is another of the things it wants all those millions for.

Do wonder for how long something like this can remain effective given the way that other areas of security are in a constant & progressive battle with the 'forces of evil'?  Still if they have managed to rasie the money then someone must have faith.

{Anti-snoop Android 'Blackphone' sees the light of day}

By/
The “Blackphone”, a super-secure Android handset promised to arrive in late June has just made its deadline, with the announcement that the first batch started to ship on the last day of the month.
The handset is the brainchild of Spanish smartphone maker Geeksphone and Silent Circle, a secure communications firm founded by inventors of PGP encryption. The two companies now operate a joint venture, Switzerland-based SGP Technologies SA, which today announced “Blackphone handsets have started shipping to the device's first pre-order customers”.

The following article is a update on Silent Circle

(Silent Circle takes on Skype, Viber with encrypted VoIP client)

By:By John Leyden, 10 Jul 2014

Silent Circle has launched a global encrypted calling service that will go up against over-the-top services Skype and Viber. Its main selling point, however, is that it will feature a way to communicate privately.
It's more bad news for mobile carriers, which are already beating off roaming-revenue pinchers in the form of popular VoIP apps Viber and Skype and text-revenue leaks as customers turn to Facebook-owned instant messaging app WhatsApp.
