Verizon Puts Data Breaches, Attack Patterns Under Microscope

by Sean M. Kerner

In any given year, multiple data breaches are reported across all industries. Trying to make sense of all those breaches and correlating the aggregate trends is where the annual Verizon Data Breach Investigation Report (DBIR) comes into play.

The 2014 DBIR, released April 22, provided insight into the data breaches that were reported across multiple industries in 2013. The 2014 DBIR received data from 63,437 security incidents, of which 1,367 were confirmed data breaches. Across all those breaches, a number of key trends emerged, including the fact that there are nine basic patterns attackers leverage to breach organizations. The specific attack patterns used, however, vary by industry as there is no one-size-fits-all approach to the data breaches analyzed in the 2014 DBIR. In the financial services industry, only 3 percent of data breaches were the result of theft or loss. In contrast, in the health care industry, theft and loss was the top attack pattern, representing 46 percent of all data breaches. The 2014 DBIR also found that law-enforcement efforts are increasingly responsible for detecting breaches.
