By Darren Pauli, 11 Sep 2014  Holes in the Webmin Unix management tool - thankfully since patched - could allow attackers to delete data on servers, says security researcher John Gordon of the University of Texas.
The remote root access server tool contained vulnerabilities in newly-created cron module environment variables that could erase data through directory traversal, which allows access to private folders, and null byte injection.
 Attackers would need to have at least limited user authorisation and could not be spun into a basic hyperlink phishing ruse, Gordon writes.
"Using directory traversal and null byte injection techniques we're able to force Webmin to delete any file on the file system," Gordon said.
