IDG News Service - Mark Zuckerberg sees the Internet as a vital service that should be made available to everyone across the world -- a service that can be as vital as, say, the ability to call for emergency help on a telephone.
In an editorial published Monday in The Wall Street Journal, the Facebook chief outlined his vision for a future of universal Internet access, and the steps he sees to get there. Currently only one-third of the world is connected, he said, with the rest lacking access due to issues like high costs or a lack of infrastructure.
Facebook has been looking to grow beyond its founding as a pure-play social networking site to become an ambitious Internet services provider, using tools that to some might seem like science fiction. Unmanned aerial drones, satellites and laser beams are now all under development and could become platforms to deliver the company's services in the future.

In other words, is sounds like Zuck is wanting to make a serious challenge to Google and the projects that Google is working as well. They both want to provide internet to as many as possible, and be a primary services provider because with that comes advertising revenue.
Still, regardless of whether the project is essentially revenue based, there are plenty of arugments and reasons why improving internet access to those currently without may be well worth persuing.

Very good point on advertising revenue.....the potential is endless on the revenue that can be made
The more experiments he gets away with, the better he gets at target advertising. The better he gets at that the more $ he can suck in.@ wrote:

Its all about making money, after all this is a capitalist country!
I agree with Zuck that internet service is vital for all, it is becoming as necessary as phone service. If he can provide it, that is great. Like any other venture, if it pans out, he will make money, if it flops, well, he can absorb the loss.
