When Edward Snowden ripped open the curtainand began revealing details of the NSA's data vacuuming, IT analysts warned that an unintended consequence of the program was a huge blow to the credibility of U.S. cloud providers. After all, they asked, why would anyone who cares about the security of their data put it someplace where government snoops could access it?

At the time, the ITIF (Information Technology & Innovation Foundation) published a prediction that the U.S. cloud computing industry stood to lose as much as $35 billion by 2016. James Staten, a veteran Forrester Research analyst, suggested that the ITIF might be too low, saying the hit could be as high as $180 billion, or 25 percent of overall IT service provider revenues.

Washington Post investigation asserts that the NSA collects data mostly from ordinary citizens, not potential terrorists

According to a four-month investigation by the Washington Post based on information provided by Edward Snowden, ordinary Internet users far outnumber legally targeted foreigners in the communications intercepted by the National Security Agency from U.S. digital networks.
Indeed, 9 of 10 account holders found in a large store of intercepted electronic conversations, which Snowden provided in full to the Post, were not the intended surveillance targets. Instead, they were gathered as part of the NSA's monitoring of other people of interest.

Fact is that people should know by now that once you put something out there, it is up for grabs.

As for ordinary internet users, could it be the NSA is randomly scanning in an effort to prevent "homegrown terrorists"

I do not condone invading the privacy of citizens. The problem in the US is that this country is still learning how to deal with the mentality of terrorist. So, we are all subjected to being "looked at". Personally I think that wasting time poking in on the innocent makes it easier for terrorist to slip thru the cracks. In Israel, it is part of everyday life and they are more advanced and efficient in
security.

Rule of thumb is dont put anything on the web that you dont want on the front page of the newspaper. Anything you post, share, etc is subject to being the headlines of every newspaper around the world.
