Hello Webroot Community,

Dan from Webroot’s Threat Research Team here. As malware researchers, we are often asked about malware threats that appear in news articles and blog posts. This week has been no different. An article about the Zeus Trojan appeared in a publication for Online Retailers, and a new spam campaign impersonating Skype has been sighted as well. If you are running Webroot SecureAnywhere, we have you protected, and you need not worry about these threats.

Those of  you that read our Webroot Threat Blog know that our Blogger Dancho Danchev has been following SMS flooders using Skype among other apps that can be used to send SMS messages for a while now. Now we’re seeing reports of spam emails claiming that you have a new voicemail on Skype.

Zeus is a threat that we’re quite familiar with, and our protection against it is excellent. Webroot SecureAnywhere also has the added protection of our Identity Shield, so even if a new variant of Zeus were to get by our protection, the Identity Shield would prevent the Threat from intercepting any personal data.

Spam containing malware links is nothing new. Some recent spam campaigns have impersonated a new security tool from the FDIC and reservation confirmation for US Airways, and who could forget everyone’s favorite “male enhancement” pills? Be suspicious of any email that you were not expecting, and remember that you can go directly to a company’s website instead of clicking on an email link. While Webroot SecureAnywhere does not block spam, we will block any executable payloads should you click on a malicious link.
