Microsoft is urging users to apply a critical security patch that could leave some users vulnerable to threats.

"The critical IE update affects versions 7, 8, and 9, and could allow an attacker to remotely run code on a user's PC using a 'specially crafted Web page,' according to Microsoft. As such, someone who exploited the hole could grab the same rights as the local user, of special concern if the user has administrative rights," said Lance Whitney, CNET correspondent.

We recommend turning on automatic updates in Windows to help close the window of vulnerability. Learn about automatic updates here: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows-vista/Understanding-Windows-automatic-updating

On a related note, if you've ever noticed some days you have WAY more updates to install that others, its not because the technology gods were smiting you for a computer faux pas you made earlier that week.

It was actually probably the second Tuesday of the month which is a day known as "Patch Tuesday" in which Microsoft releases security updates in batches for users. If you have automatic updates enabled you don't need to worry about these because they will be installed automatically.  If you prefer to do your updating on your own be sure to check for updates on the second Tuesday of each month so don't fall behind.

You PROBABLY won't look forward to this day as much as other holidays but who knows, maybe you can think of it as getting several tiny virtual presents for your computer each month.

Also on the 4th Tuesday of each month there might be some non critical updates also!

This last "Patch Tuesday" was a nightmare. From the False positive update definition on MSE hitting Google as a Exploit to the  reported Failed update of Silverlight KB2668562 which didn't fail, it just reported as failed. :@ I'm glad Microsoft got it all sorted out and everything is working fine now. 😃
