Last week, just a day after Google's announcement, I wrote about the Chromecast and its potential. $35 for a cross-platform video streaming device-even if it's only YouTube and Netflix for now-is still a good deal. And while it is far too early to call the device a surefire TV game changer, people are definitely interested.

But that's not the moral of this story. According to a TechHive article from earlier this morning, the brand new device has already been hacked. Yep, that was quick. However, the hack is less about malware and more about rooting the device. In fact that's all it's about. That, and the fact that the people behind the exploit (GTV Hacker) are claiming that the Chromecast is more Android than Chrome OS, despite Google's claims.

"The software appears to be a modified version of Google TV, derived from the same bootloader, kernel, scripts and binaries, and Google TV itself runs a customized version of Android. The big difference is that it lacks the Dalvik virtual machine architecture found in Android devices."

What does that mean? Basically, that, even when rooted, a person wouldn't be able to sideload Android apps on the Chromecast. But while there's no real reason a user would want to root their Chromecast at the moment, the hack shows that the device has more to share with Google TV than meets the eye.
