Is this because of Webroot firewall? I have played discs before but now every one I try has same error message.

The best way to troubleshoot would be whitelisting the VLC software on Webroot. You can follow instructions on how to do that here:
Otherwise, I’d suggest playing around in your VLC settings. Make sure video source is correctly pointing to the DVD drive.
