Explorer`s memory usage will spike dending on what the system is doing. For example if your copying a lot of files/moving files. I would only be worried if it stayed at 300mb for long periods of time. Windows 8.1 task manager is quite informative, you could create a log of explorers memory usage over a certain time period but unless its staying at 300mb I wouldnt worry about it.

Hi Roy It does only in Windows 8.1 Pro 64bit but not in 32bit and Joe knows about it and I think he's got someone looking into it? It goes that High and then you turn off WSA and restart explorer.exe it goes back to normal around 25 to 30 MB then when you turn WSA back on then explorer.exe goes back up to 280 to 300MB of RAM.

OK in that case its a little different, I was only going on the information in initial post. If its a bug then Joe and the guys will get right on it. To the original poster are you using 64 or 32bit version of Win 8?

Great to hear!

Hello :)

I have the same problem. Over 300 MB RAM using explorer.exe.

I use Windows 8.1 64 bit clean install.

Uninstall WSA the explorer uses 40-50 MB of RAM.

On my 32 bit 8.1 no problem with this.

Hello ZockerFreak and Welcome to the Webroot Community Forums!

As there is an issue but there is no need to uninstall WSA unless you have low amount of RAM I see no effect when using it on my Win 8.1 x64 with 2GB of RAM.

HTH,

Thanks for the extra info but is your Tablet 64bit as far as I know it only affects Win 8.1 64bit? Can you please check to make sure?

Thanks,

Daniel
Yes on my old Lenovo X60 runs 64 Bit Windows 8.1

On my new Acer W3 with 32 Bit Windows 8.1 no Problems.

They know of it and be sure they will find a fix and include it in one of the next Builds. I just asked for an update and will let everyone know.

Cheers,

Daniel 😉

Try forcing the installation of .27. My computer with the explorer.exe RAM usage doesn't have the issue anymore. I've noticed that my home computers don't seem to be updating automatically to it. It was issued to fix a CPU usage issue for business customers, but it has other unnamed fixes in it. It is not a beta.

Mike the Consumer & Business version is up to v8.0.4.42 now and I don't think that's the solution as I continue to have issues with v8.0.4.42 and I tried the Business version also.

Hello all!
Thank you for reporting this. It was just brought to my attention and I am easily able to reproduce this on two Windows 8.1(x64), one running consumer, the other business.

I am not a Win8 user (buy choice), is it not common for explorer.exe to consume that much RAM on a regular basis? Sounds like something Microsoft would do... :D

Let me run some additional tests and do some research and I will escalate to development.

Please let me know if anyone is seeing this on any other OS's.

Hi Shawn,

Joe knows about it and he said it's on his list but anything you can find would be great and it's only Win 8.1 x64.

Thanks,

Daniel

Thanks Explanoit!

I have completed testing and found no workaround. luckily it is not brining systems to a hault just yet...

I have passed along process dumps, logs, etc to development and they should be looking into this shortly, or as Explanoit stated, they may already be working on this.

Thanks again all, stay tuned.
