Internet explorer recently stopped being unable to connect to the internet.  Firefox still works.

I am going to take a stretch here and assume you are using Windows 8. If so then there is a really easy fix for this. Go to the below link and choose turn off Internet explorer and then turn it back on.

What this does is basically reassigns the proxy and all its setting for IE. This should re-establish a connection and IE will be back up and running. A basic reason for this troubleshooting is because you stated Firefox is still connecting. Internet Explorer has documented issues with "Remembering" proxy and settings and this will resolve that for you.
After connection is re-established I strongly recommend to update ASAP. There is a Windows update that fixes this problem.
