Virus alert

Opened a major oil company's website today and a warning came up saying my system was infected with a virus. I could not close the window and it covered the page I was on and the name. So I clicked on my webroot virus program and ran a scan and nothing appeared. After that I could close the window and close the browser. I ran the Webroot again it still was clear. May I be confident that the alert was a scam and if not webroot cleared it even though it didn't show up?

Hello and Welcome to the Webroot Community!

That sounds about right! May I suggest that you install a good free Ad Blocker here are some that many use that can help with these type of Browser Scare attacks in which are harmless:

For Internet Explorer Ad Block Plus: https://adblockplus.org/

For Firefox uBlock: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/ublock-origin/?src=ss or Privacy Badger: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-us/firefox/addon/privacy-badger-firefox/

Google Chrome uBlock: https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/ublock-origin/cjpalhdlnbpafiamejdnhcphjbkeiagm?hl=en or Privacy Badger: https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/privacy-badger/pkehgijcmpdhfbdbbnkijodmdjhbjlgp

Thanks,

Daniel ;)
Thanks and not to be a pest, but webroot would have picked up the virus if there was one, correct. Sorry to ask as I really like Webroot and it has always seemed to work correctly. Just making sure. I am an "older computer user" lol

Yes if it was a Virus but IMO it wasn't it was just a Scare Web Page but if you would like a security check Submit a Support Ticket and they will let you know and it's free of charge with your paid subscription!

Thanks,

A routine virus scan uncovered a threat.  I followed the Webroot protocol running the scan, then running it once more to be certain the threat had been removed.

three days later, another routine scan revealed another threat.  This time, the Webroot protocol did not remove the threat and I was told to contact Webroot support.

There was no further information on the website and as I write this dispatch, I am on a 40-minute hold for Webroot Customer support.

Have I contracted a virus that Webroot cannot manage?

Hello @Whidbey96 it’s best to Submit a Support Ticket as they can see what is going on with your system and if there is an infection they will help you remove it!
