Anti-Exploit/Anti-Ransomware and WSA

I was wondering if using Anti Exploit and Anti Ransomware software is really necessary when I already use WSA.  Recently installed MBAM 3.0 trial but of course now I have another real time program sucking up cpu cycles and slowing down startup.  It almost feels like web browsing has also slowed down but that could be my imagination.  So in a nut shell are these types of programs just redundant and not necessary when using WSA ?

Hi Danjo

Well, there are two schools of thought (at least) on this subject...and I would say that generally there is no need for additional AE and/or AR software if you are running WSA. The WSA monitoring & rollback fucntionality is particulalrly effective against ransomware attacks if they happen after WSA is installed.

However, there is also the school of thought that a layered defense is 'better' given that no one security application (not even WSA) can be 100% effective 100% of the time, and so running a specialist secondasry or tertiary app has some merit.

It is really down to personal preference and what you do online, etc. For normal activities...probably no need but if engaging in more 'dangerous' activities then most probbaly best to beef up the defences.

Hope that helps? Just my thoughts on the subject...and I am sure that some of the other members will chime in with their equally valid views. ;)

Thanks for the quick response.  You guys are truely the best.  I think I have become overly obsessed with cybersecurity lately to the point that my machine is over loaded with unnecessary software.  Given my conservative habits and that I don't venture into the dark web, I should be able to sleep well tonight.

Thanks again guys.

Hi Danjo

Glad to help out as and when I can.

Whilst I would say it is never good to be over obsesive re. online security a little. well placed 'obsesiveness' is no bad thing as it keeps one sharp to the potential issues...and the miscreants out ther are a mean and tricky lot.

And it never hurts to take additional preacautions with a 'mild' layered defenses approach, especailly if that provides reassurance...so an additional layer will never be a bad thing...whilst 2, 3 and/or 4 additional layers starts to get into the 'over obsessive' category that you mentioned.

And the best thing is that if you do decide to take further precautions then WSA is designed to work with rather than against further security apps being run in conjunction with it. ;)

I too was " overly " obssesed with security layers ( anti malware - 3rd party firewall - anti exploit and an anti executeable ) it is way to much when you are a " safe " surfer , not click happy or venture out onto crack / warez sites. the main problem with too much security softs is overlapping in features , wich may result in even more security holes. just use wsa and 2 or 3 on demand scanners to scan with once a month , just be extra sure. It is a real chore to have faith in the saying " less is more " but you do not but a pc to put on an overkill of protection software that puts a huge break on your day to day activities 🙂 good luck in the choices that you decide to make!

Thanks for all the great responses,  this is why I love the Webroot community.  Always a quick and informative reply to questions.  Other forums seem to be filled with fanboy trolls that never offer much solution to problems.  Don't know why I ever looked anywhere else.  Been using WSA on my PC's for over a year now without a single security issue, slowdown, or crash...awesome.  Once the security software license expires on my Mac (different vendor) I plan on migrating all my machines to WSA.
As always keep up the good fight

You'll love WSA on the Mac. No problems or slowdowns. 😉
