WSA blocks Java plugins in Opera 12

Userlevel 7
Hello,

Just updated Opera to the latest build 12.00 and have noticed that WSA blocks Java's plugin (having Java SE 7 update 5). There is no other solution than to move Opera from Protected to Allow. Today, before update to Opera 12.00, no problems experienced, i.e. Opera set to Protected and Java plugins worked correctly.

However WSA doesn't block Java in IE9 even if IE is set to Protected. It looks like that this issue is somehow related to today's release of new Opera 12.

Thanks & regards,
pegas

EDIT: have noticed that not only Java plugins are being blocked but also Flash Player plugins. It seems that WSA blocks all plugins across my Opera unless Opera is set Allow.

Both Flash and Java are working properly through Opera 12 for me.  I did have to restart the browser once when it appeared Opera was not detecting either Flash or Java shortly after installing it.  But after I restarted Opera, it worked.  Can you try that please?  If the issue persists, it would be best to contact us via the support system.

Hello TH!

Thanks for the issue confirmation. Glad I am not alone 😛 Also do thanks for cooperation with the Webroot support to resolve the issue. You know me, I would do that 😉 but I am quite busy now, travelling here and there so I don't have enough time :(

I will closely be watching this thread though.

Thanks & regards,

HTTP Sites set to "Medium", "High", or higher?

The new Java stuff for Opera was not yet set Trusted in the cloud due to slow Java update uptake, so I would expect that increased security for HTTP sites or Java trying to load on HTTPS sites would not work at higher settings.

Yes HTTP set to Max! And I just set HTTP to default and it works fine now Thanks Kit! ;)

As an added bonus, I made certain determinations in the system based on the logs you posted.  Not full coverage, but it cleared up some things.  You may be able to get it to work with HTTP at max after a scan.  If not, a quick ticket for threat research to make determs on other files related to the new Java and Opera stuff may help.

In the meantime, I'm going to call 1:30 am a night.  It's a night.  Night!

Still can't put it up to Max on HTTP even after a scan and no reply from support!

TH, development has been made aware of this issue. It appears the latest version of Opera changed its underlying functionality, which is causing the Identity Shield to not protect it entirely. This issue is unique to the new version of Opera. It would be best to use another browser until this is resolved.

Thanks Jim that was my understanding as well we need to wait for a new version of WSA as it's not an easy fix! ;)

Hello Jim!

Thanks for the info. I fully understand  that it takes a certain time to make WSA compatible with Opera 12. However I am not going to use another browser as I have hundreds of bookmarks, speed dials etc., using also Opera's in-built e-mail client, IRC and RSS. In short I am utilizing all features of Opera. So you will surely understand that to deviate to another browser is not a point for me. Therefore can you kindly confirm that all other WSA modules are working properly with Opera 12 except the identity shield.

Thanks & regards,

The Web Threat Shield is very closely interrelated with the Identity Shield. I've done some testing that indicates that at least part of the Web Threat Shield is having trouble with Opera 12 as well. However, the other shields are independent of the Identity Shield and will still function properly. You will still be protected against malware, but it will not look for that malware before going to the website. However, if malware in fact exists on that site, it would still be picked up on-write or on-execute.

Thx Jim for clarification. Great post, indeed.

Just a quick update ...

Webroot released two builds .196 and .198 (currently only for closed beta users) since I opened this thread. Unfortunately neither resolve the reported issues. What's more now also Adober Reader's PDF plugin 10.1.3 is being blocked together with Java & Flash. So in my case it is worse than before two weeks. Opera has to be allowed instead of protected otherwise it is absolutely unusable 😞

Hi Pegas,

We haven't forgotten about this problem. 🙂 The issue with certain plugins not functioning in Opera 12 is still under investigation. The beta builds in question do not have a fix for this issue in them, but hopefully an upcoming one will have such a fix once our lead developer determines what the problem is. We'll be sure to update you as more information becomes available.

I am pleased to confirm that build .203 resolves the blocked Java, Flash and PDF plugins in Opera 12.
