That's not a $200 Apple Gift Card...It's Malware!

Earlier today, Dancho Danchev posted on our Threat Blog about the newest trick up malware writers' sleeves...a fake Apple Store.gift card email that's going around in an attempt to trick users to take the bait and click the malicious link. Shortly after, both MacRumors and SlashGear picked up the story.

But there's also a twist to the malware. It's not your typical phishing attack...

From SlashGear:
"What's most interesting about this scam, is that it doesn't use phishing like similar tricks, where scammers have you log into a fake website in order to claim your "prize." This one actually bypasses that altogether and installs malware directly on your computer to obtain personal information and such."

All the user has to do to be tricked is...very little.

From MacRumors:

Specifically, when the user clicks on a hyperlink within the email or opens an attachment, a malicious Java-based exploit installs itself onto the computer."

Webroot users can breathe a sigh of relief, however. SecureAnywhere proactively protects against these kinds of threats.

So... not only do Mac's really need protection (I am still amazed how many people still dent this simple fact.), but the.gift Cards. Do too! :)

Thanks for the post! It is certainly a different way of going about it from the normal emails of the ilk that I see regularly!
