I might be a bit dense tonight, been running a pretty decent fever for the last couple of days.  I have been tossing through my mind for the last 30 minutes and I am just coming up blank.  (UGH)

Hello Linda it sounds like you have some OS issues as some Services are not starting up and or crashing did you try a reboot to see if the Icons come back and are working correctly? Have you ever done a complete OS reinstall with the Windows DVD also can you tell me what OS you are using and if it's 32bit or 64bit? And please the make of the PC and if it has a Recovery Partition or Disc's?

Yeah, I tried re-booting, icons are back and OK, padlock is still grey, even on e-mail, Facebook and banking sites.  
I'm using a Dell laptop, with Windows 7 Home Premium, 64bit.  I do have some discs somewhere but I havn't done any re-installations etc. as, you might already know, I don't like fiddling about with things that I don't have 100% confidence in doing.  I've just been reading that Windows is gonna fade out Windows 7 at the end of this month and that they are to stop their on-line support from January 2015!  Do you think I should get a newer version of Windows, is 10 the latest?

Just to add to Baldrick's wise advice. Not sure what you were reading, but Windows 7 SP1 still has a long way to go yet, excepting Mainstream (incl. Phone as you said) support. Here's info about Windows Lifecycle and Support Lifecycle:

Hi Dermot7, meant to say Microsoft has announced it will no longer supply certain versions of the OS to hardware partners from October 31. This was amongst the suggestions thrown up in a search for laptop tracking; looking into security tracking software.

I have a Dell tablet too, and use the built in diagnostic app to keep it up to date and I must say I find it pretty good.  My advice would be avoid your 'place to get things fixed' as they sound like a lot of the purported PC specialists, and go with what Dell is advising on the basis that it is a Dell machine and they should know what they are about, especially in the case of the 'urgent'...but make sure that you have created a System Restore POint (assume you know how otherwise post back for help) just before you apply the updates advised by Dell...just in case.
 
As for the "don't Windows download all relevant system drivers when they automatically update" question...well, Yes and No...it depends on the drivers concerned.  If they are MS drivers, i.e., system drivers then Yes...but drivers for 3rd party hardware, i.e., sound card, graphics card, motherborad, etc., then usually know although sometimes yo will find that in the Optional Dowload section of Windows Updates, there may well be 'Optional' updates such as these lurking which Windows Update will not apply automatically...I currently have one for my graphics card that I have yet to find time to apply.

You are most welocme...if you Google "accredited Dell repairs UK" I think that you may find what yo are looking for but not knowing what part of the country you reside in I cannot be sure.
